Yes I know what you are thinking. Sunlight, but we live in England?! You’ve heard of vitamin D (which is a hormone believe it or not.) Vitamin D is unique in the fact that it is produced I the skin as a result of exposure to sunlight (yes I know we are in England!) Vitamin D has several important roles, one of the more important tasks it has is to protect the body from diseases such as multiple sclerosis, rickets, type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowl disease and arthritis to name a few. A deficiency in vitamin Dan lead to aggressive forms of skin cancer, studies have shown that optimal levels of vitamin D offers protection against sunburn and skin cancer.

One of it’s other functions include helping to regulate the amount of calcium  and phosphate in the body. It’s these two essential nutrients that are needed by the body to keep our bones and teeth healthy. It also supports proper functioning of muscle contraction and nerve impulses too.

Vitamin D can be found in a small number of foods too.

  • Oily fish (especially salmon.)
  • Eggs
  • Fat spreads

The best and most natural way to get your vitamin D though is through sunlight exposure. 20-30 minutes a day can work wonders for your health. Get outside as often as you can. I always advise my clients who work indoors to take time out of the office and go for a walk. Vitamin D through sunlight exposure is free, take advantage of something that will boost your health.
